On September 15, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), the China National Center for Biotechnology Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and China Medical City signed a memorandum of understanding, where the three parties have agreed on the establishment of ICGEB-China Regional Research Center.
This May, at the 24th ICGEB Member State Conference, the construction proposal for China Regional Research Center was approved by all the 64 member states. ICGEB’s deployment of its first regional research center in CMC will further raise the international cooperation level of China Medical City, and promote the rapid gathering of international talents, technologies and project achievements, thus accelerating industrialization and increasing its global reputation.
Industrial cooperation and technology transfer are among the initial priorities of the Center. Next, it is to focus on the innovative R&D in the areas of viruses (vaccine research and development), biotherapeutics (including the production of biosimilars), cancer research, diagnostics, non-communicable diseases, and so on. While integrating ICGEB’s global innovation resources, the Center will first seek collaboration with the companies within CMC on the transfer and transformation of R&D findings. In addition, at least two international scientific events will be undertaken by the Center each year, together with scholarships to post-doctoral scientists for joint innovation projects.
